On opening day of little league, I feel that the teams should be able to play a game. These teams have practiced hard. The travel ball sure does take over. It is not fair. My grandson cannot have a game on opening day, because of the travel team. Opening day has been planned for a long time. Little league used to be for the kids and for fun, not any more. I just feel that on opening day of Little League, the travel teams should not have any games scheduled and play with the little league organization in their home town.

    Brenda,

I could not agree with you more. Little League is not what it used to be. My daughter did not have a game on opening day either, and it was very disappointing. Everything is revolved around travel ball now. I am not taking anything away from travel ball, but to me little league is nothing but a practice for the travel ball players. It isn’t fair for those who just want to play ball and have fun. If you want to play travel ball, great, but let those who just want to play little league play the way it used to be.

On opening day of Little League there are some teams that can not play simply because there are an odd number of teams in the division. Travel Ball does not run the league. Some families choose to allow their children to play both and it is because their children like to play the game for fun with their school friends and they like to play different positions than they normally play with their travel ball teams. These families make a huge sacrafice with their time just getting their kids where they need to be for practice or for games to play both levels. Travel ball is very competitive and sometimes the schedules don’t work for opening day because they pay alot of money to compete in weekend tournaments and they have to be committed to their travel team or they let their team down. Little league has to suffer for 1 game or play shorthanded for the kids that can be there. Over all the league is better for having these players in it because it brings the competition level up. My best suggestion is for you to step up and volunteer your time to help make the league better for all players because if you haven’t noticed almost all the coaches and board members are also involved in travel ball. Its for the love of the game and for the kids, come out and volunteer or don’t complain.

all teams should have played on opening day. after all isnt that the spirit of it?
i quite enjoyed the parade and was great for the other kids as well. they teams and cheer leaders all seemed syked and ready to rumble. i wish the schedules
were easier to print. i dont have internet at home right now, but wish there was
a way to have a schedule handy. can they be mailed? or too costly for short time of play? anyway….they all should enjoy. a time of life no one should miss out on.
so….lets play ball!!!!! and “CAL” CAB3 we are all rooting for ‘ya…go get em.

I agree with everyones feelings that all kids should play on opening day, but changing opening day because of easter weekend was the real reason for the travel kids not being there. The travel team had already paid for tournaments and even some of them hotels alot earlier for that weekend when the little league figured out that they put opening day on easter weekend. Little league fixed their problem , leaving the travel teams out of the decision.Granted some travel coaches feel little league is inferior and do their best to keep their kids out of it,most good travel coahes know that the more ball their kids play the better they get. In fact some really good travel coaches have put a lot of time effort and money into little league and have taught your kids better than most little league coaches can. Please do not look at all travel teams and coaches in a bad light because of a few. I know for a fact that with a lot of help from travel teams coaches and players that Laurel has been represented very well in softball and baseball all stars. The better competition can also make your child that much better. As in everything there are good and bad sides to consider ,but I think travel teams and little league can be good for each other.
